Biography
Dr. M. S. Roopesh obtained his PhD degree in Biological and Agricultural Engineering (Food Engineering) from Washington State University (WSU, USA) in 2012. After completing his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Washington State University until December 2015. In January 2016, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the AFNS Department at the University of Alberta. In 2022, he was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure. In 2017, he was selected as one of the Emerging Leaders in Food Science and Engineering from around the globe to participate in the Emerging Leaders Network Program, organized by IFT. He received the Research and Innovation Award from the Faculty of Agricultural, Life, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta in 2020 for outstanding research. In 2024, he received a Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program scholarship (part of Global Affairs Canada’s International Scholarships Program) from the University of Alberta to support international collaboration. Roopesh received the International Engagement Award from the Faculty of Agricultural, Life, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta in 2025.

Dr. Roopesh has built a Food Safety and Sustainability Engineering research program at the University of Alberta. The overarching theme of Dr. Roopesh’s research is to apply engineering knowledge to develop novel technologies to improve the safety and overall sustainability of food systems. Dr. Roopesh has a strong track record of innovation and a multidisciplinary research program to develop novel, sustainable, non-thermal food-processing technologies that deliver multiple benefits for end users. Specifically, he is focusing on the development and scale-up of atmospheric cold plasma, nanobubble technologies, ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs), and 3D food-printing technologies. He has authored 87 publications in reputed international journals, 5 patent applications and 4 licensing opportunities.
